Steel Products and Wagon Loading

Steel comes in a large range of shapes and sizes to suit many needs. Raw slab and billet are sold as such, but most of it is processed into other products, such as, plate, sheet, bar, rod, wire and RHS/RSJ structural beams to name a few. This page will help modellers load their wagons with appropriate size steel products.

Pipes – Pipe traffic has been varied over the years. Household plumbing pipes were made in short 3ft lengths and gradually increased over time. Industrial uses for plumbing pipes had pipes made in 40ft lengths and transported on TME wagons.

Pipes were generally carried in open wagons, with flat wagons carrying special and small consignments. Today larger industrial pipe and main gas line piping is still carried in open wagons.
