Shunters Floats

 

A ‘Shunters Float’ is a vehicle that shunting personnel would ride upon to cut down the amount of walking required when moving long distances in large marshalling yards. The vehicles were fitted with transitional couplings to enable it to couple to any type of wagon or act as a ‘match truck’ between mis-matched vehicles and locomotives.

These vehicles were of many designs and origins. Here are a few pictures of various vehicles.

The Goulburn float, built on two steam engine ‘Turret Tender’ underframes

They are shown in storage in Cootamundra.

 

NZAF 87010, its underframe once belonged to a bogie cattle wagon.
